The nurses work around my schedule and come to me where and when I need them
Our specialist cancer services ensure private medically insured and self-paying patients who want an alternative to hospital can start their treatment faster. Irvine, a self-pay cancer patient shares his story.
About Irvine
I’ve been receiving immunotherapy treatment for the last 6 years and since 2024 I’ve been a Lloyds Clinical patient. My oncologist, Professor Justin Stebbing, recommended Lloyds Clinical to me.
I live in many countries. When I am visiting the UK, Lloyds Clinical nurses will come to either my hotel in London or my house near Beaulieu in the New Forest. The nurses work around my schedule and come to me where and when I need them. It’s an exceptional service.
I have infusions every 4 weeks and I feel incredibly lucky that I can have my treatment at home.

The Lloyds Clinical nurses are always extremely pleasant and efficent
When you go into hospital, there is a tension, possibly shown in increased blood pressure. Hospitals do a great job of minimising that, but you are still in a hospital environment and that brings an anxiety with it. The journey from my home to the hospital in Southampton takes around an hour, sometimes longer if it’s morning rush hour.
When I get to the hospital for treatment, my infusion takes several hours, so there’s lots of time sitting around. It’s a public room and there are other people at different stages of cancer treatment – and their anxiety just adds to your anxiety. Often the rooms are quite small and crowded; you’re sitting there for 3 hours or more with people you don’t know. You can’t really do anything while you are there – you can’t concentrate, you can’t read, you just accept it. It’s no fun at all, even the best hospitals in the world are not fun places to be.
The quality and skill of the Lloyds Clinical nurses, who are very experienced, is very, very good. They’re always on time; they sit with me while I’m having my infusion; they are always extremely pleasant and efficient.
Being at home is totally different to a hospital. You are not in a room with lots of other people. The atmosphere is calmer and more relaxed. I can read a book or work on my computer when at home; much more difficult in the hospital oncology room.
As a self-paying patient, it’s also less expensive for me to have my treatment at home compared to hospital. I don’t think a lot of people realise that.
I feel so lucky that I don’t have to go to hospital. It’s an exceptional service, and I recommend it to everyone in the UK.
